Frequently asked questions about our case studies

How our case studies work, and what they reveal about buying Japanese imports.

Are these case studies real?+

Yes. Every case study is based on a real customer who verified their vehicle through JP Sheet. Names and chassis numbers are partially redacted to protect privacy, but the auction data, grades and findings are genuine.

What can I learn from these cases?+

Each case shows what the dealer claimed versus what the auction sheet actually revealed. The recurring themes are mileage rollback, hidden accident history, deployed airbags that were never disclosed, and flood damage sold as clean. Learning to spot these patterns is the best protection a buyer has.

How often do dealers misrepresent vehicles?+

In our experience, a significant share of inspected vehicles show some discrepancy between the dealer's description and the auction sheet — ranging from minor inconsistencies to serious fraud. It is common enough that verifying before you pay is always worthwhile.

Can I avoid buying a misrepresented car?+

Yes — always verify the auction sheet before paying. Even a $7 verification can save you thousands if the dealer's claims do not match the auction record. Most of the buyers in these case studies were saved precisely because they checked first.

Will my own case be published?+

Only with your consent. We publish case studies anonymously and only with written permission. Your verification is private by default — nothing is shared without your say-so.

What should I do if a case here matches my situation?+

Verify your own chassis number before committing to anything. If your situation matches a case here — a suspiciously low price, a dealer reluctant to share the chassis number, or a grade that seems too good — run the chassis through JP Sheet first. A Deeper Scan ($15) adds a 9-point risk audit if you want the full picture before you buy.
